After you complete your orthodontic treatment, our dentists will provide you with a retainer. This is a custom-made oral appliance worn directly over the teeth used to keep them properly aligned. As you get older, your teeth tend to shift; a retainer is designed to make sure your teeth are staying in their corrected position so that you can still enjoy the smile you worked hard for. There are three types of retainers you can choose from, these include:
- Hawley retainers are custom-molded plastic plates attached by thin metal wires and clasps. These are typically used to cover the roof of the mouth to support the upper arch or lay along the tongue side of your teeth to keep the bottom arch in place.
- Clear retainers are designed with clear plastic so your retainer appears more discreet.
- Fixed retainers, also known as bonded retainers, are metal wire or bars that are permanently placed on the back teeth to prevent them from shifting out of place.
Not only do retainers work to keep your smile healthy and straight, but they can also help you resist the urge to clench your jaw and minimize the risk of developing a TMJ disorder.
